Predicting loss and delay to follow-up of amblyopia patients
Amblyopia—reduction in vision caused by abnormal visual development early in life—can lead to irreversible loss of vision without timely monitoring and treatment. In this study, we used a quantitative model to predict patients that are at risk of not coming back for follow-up appointments with their caregiver. We used Social Determinants of Health (SDoH), clinical visit factors, and previous patient activity as predictors in our models. We found that clinical visit factors (e.g., whether the patient visited a satellite clinic) and previous patient activity (e.g., previous cancellations or delay in follow-up) were most important for predicting loss to follow-up.
